Humbling

Just returned from a friend's birthday party where there was lots of good food and good hanging. As the party itself wound down, a few of us ended up sitting around watching a Miles Davis DVD that was really amazing. It was a look at his transition from an acoustic to electric sound in the early seventies, and had great interviews with many of the musicians involved in his group. Listening to a line-up including Miles, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, Airto Moreira, and others made me almost want to give up on music entirely... these are guys that are simply in a completely different league. Nothing like watching/hearing the masters in action to make you realize just how much you suck. It's a weird feeling somewhere between inspiration and humiliation, if that makes sense... most of all, as the title says... it's humbling.

Also watched DVD's by Bela Fleck and "the artist once again known as" Prince which looked quite promising (I only saw a few minutes of each). Note to self: search out more music DVD's... there's obviously a lot out there I've been missing.
